My boss now wants me to become a Technical Manager in Nokia Siemens Networks. What shall I do? Should I signify my interest knowing that I have plans to go abroad? He is giving me today and tomorrow for the final decision. It's causing me to think deeper. Another sleepless night of thinking? Sometimes, opportunities come in droves but you'll have to decide which one is the best for you.
Being a manager here in the Philippines won't be a problem if I will just live and work here the rest of my life. But, I really want otherwise. In fact, I'm just awaiting the employment contract from overseas. Should the contract come then bye, bye Philippines. The position that I'll be having abroad is a Senior Oracle Database Administrator (a position I so desire), and I will command better pay than being a Technical Manager here.
It's now a matter of career advancement vs. money. I'm just praying in the end that my final decision is right. Help me, God.

New Year, New Hope
The year 2008 was a bad year for the entire world. Global financial crisis, that is. It also made my lifetime savings disappeared in a snap due to a forex scam. Amf!
My year 2009 will be characterized by the following:
- A new hairstyle (I have just recently had my "semi-kalbo" haircut)
- A new career (I'm looking forward to work overseas by refreshing and enhancing my Oracle DBA skills. I'm tired of working with Nokia applications. I will be better off specializing in Oracle database administration because this is a better passport to work overseas. So many opportunities are really available for database experts all over the world)
- A new strategy in life (I'm looking forward to permanently migrate to other country and finish my MBA there instead. I'm actually narrowing my choices between Canada and Australia. I'm no longer interested to finish my MBA here)
- A new outlook in life (being more optimistic and patient in dealing with others)
The above-mentioned are not my new year's resolution. They are far more than that.

My Oakley Eyeglasses
Sosyal! I just can't express my happiness. Got a new Oakley eyeglasses to replace my old, worn-out, dilapidated, classic, antic eyeglasses.
We were in Mall of Asia last Sunday when I happened to see an optical shop. I dropped a visit and asked around. The optometrist suggested that I should have my eyes checked which I gladly complied. Initially, my plan was just to replace the lens of my eyeglasses, but eventually I chanced upon the Oakley, and got so attracted with it. Besides being branded, the look is just so elegant. I asked the price. Whoa! It's more than 8,000 pesos! My wife told me it's high time that I bought something for myself, something which I really like. So there I went, I bought Oakley together of course with the new lenses for my impaired vision. Yahoo!
Now I can see better, much better with Oakley :-)
I just don't like to see what's inside my wallet 'coz the sight is so ugly. No bucks inside.
To Oakley: You've just stolen my hard earned money. Amf!

Master of Ceremonies
On Dec. 4, 2008, I was invited by NEC Foundation Inc. (NECFI) to be the Master of Ceremonies of the scholarship awarding ceremony. I was just notified on December 2 by Sarah, NECFI's ever loyal staff. I accepted the challenge so that I would have at least in my entire life to have an exposure to such event.
It was my first time to be an emcee ever :-) Just to let you know, I was once a scholar of NECFI from 1994-1996, that was, during my 4th and 5th year in college taking up BSECE at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM). The NECFI scholarship then was adveritised in People's Journal in 1993, to which I applied. At first, I was quite hesitant to apply for such scholarship knowing that the ad was nationwide in scope. But still due to my can-do attitude in life, I applied and threw punches in the air. I submitted the necessary requirements including my grades from early years of college, essays, high school extra curricular activities, among others. Luckily for me, I was an honor student and at the same time Math contestant during my high school days. These achievements helped me a lot in clinching the coveted scholarship award. In 1994, I was awarded with NECFI scholarship. At that time, I needed financial support very badly. Tuition fees, project fees, monthly allowances and other school expenses were all shouldered by NECFI just for me to study well and maintain an average of 2.00 every semester. After I graduated from college, I worked with NEC for three years (as a sign of my gratitude) then later moved to Nokia Networks, now Nokia Siemens Networks (after Nokia and Siemens merged together)
In the awarding ceremony, the guests were VIP's which included Dr. Emerlinda Roman (UP President), a well-known figure in the academe. With her were some officers and members of NECFI Board of Trustees, to name a few, Mr. Angelo Timoteo De Rivera (NECFI Chairman and Commissioner, CICT) and Edgardo Atanacio (NECFI Executive Director and UP Professor).
NECFI office is currently located in UP Diliman. The awardees in the ceremony were from various schools all throughout the Philippines.
No matter how tense I was since it was my first time to be an emcee, I managed to crack jokes during the ceremony including the joke that my alma mater is really a Pamantasan ng mga Luko-luko sa Maynila (PLM) hehehe

Whew!
I was kinda busy the past months. Got some projects to accomplish. Went to Cebu, Iloilo, Cagayan De Oro, and Davao. I stayed in good hotels in those places - Marriott in Cebu, Grand Dame in Iloilo, Maxandrea in Cagayan De Oro, and Marco Polo in Davao. One thing I did best in those hotels: I collected all their toiletries as souvenirs hehehe...
In Cebu, I visited The Sisters of Mary, Minglanilla and met some ASMSI-Cebu officers and Ronalacia there, but missed some like Ruben Rallos because he was in Leyte at that time. I gave some talk to graduating students both in Minglanilla and Talisay as per the request of Sr. Teresita Prudente, my sister-in-charge during my 4th year high in SMS Manila. I also met my batchmates Erwin Cortez, and Jun Eroles. They still look young (younger than the 60-year olds hehe).
Life is becoming too demanding for me. Kinda pressured to finish more tasks this month. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Addicted to YouTube
For three consecutive nights, I've been addicted to YouTube to the point of sleeping at the wee hours of the morning. This is too bad I think because I'm beginning to feel the stress due to lack of sleep.
It all started when I came across the video clip of NAIA-3. I felt joy when I saw the inside of that mothballed terminal. I was a having a virtual tour of the facility with the MIA Assistant General Manager as the tour guide. The NAIA-3 though still not at par with Changi Airport in Singapore or even that of Kuala Lumpur's, but I may say that it is something to be proud of especially when you start comparing it with our old and existing NAIA-1. Finally, we will be using a world-class international airport pretty soon. By estimate, the full operation of NAIA-3 will commence on March 2009, that is, if there would be no structural defect that might be discovered along the way. At present, NAIA-3 is operational only for domestic use of Cebu Pacific, PAL express, and some other budget airlines.
A series of other related video clips are also available in YouTube which I also watched. Furthermore, every night, I would be looking for some interesting video clips until I came across the Spanish-American War, subsequently showing the atrocities committed by the Americans towards Filipinos during the time that Spain was ceding the Philippines to US.
From history to Philippine Railways such as PNR, MRT, LRT to Manila day-to-day living to Big Brother of UK, US, Australia, Slovenia, I tuned myself with YouTube every night. But this time, I said to myself that it's time to stop it, and start sleeping early.
It is becoming an addiction for me to watch clips in YouTube. Is there an available drug to battle this out? Can anyone tell me please? :-)
But I still wish that copper-based Internet would soon be a thing of the past, and that Fiber Optics would be the norm. If that happens, I will be even more addicted to YouTube which will be fu*&%$#@* fast by then.
